Tonight I tried HIIT (high intensity interval training) for the first time. There are two main methods of HIIT training: little method and tabata method. Each method starts, of course, with a thorough warm up and then a length of high intensity exercise followed by a length of low intensity exercise or rest.
The Little method, developed by Dr Jonathan Little and Dr Martin Gibala, calls for twelve cycles of alternating intensity. The high intensity segment lasts for 60 seconds and the low intensity, an easy jog, lasts for 75 seconds.
The Tabata method, developed by Dr Izumi Tabata, is just eight cycles long. That's just four minutes! The high intensity segment lasts for 20 seconds but requires absolutely everything you have. The low intensity segment lasts just 10 seconds.
I did the Tabata method.
My legs felt fine, but oh my goodness, was my heart racing! I tried to jog during the low intensity segments but after a few cycles I ended up walking during them.
